According to research by the National Institutes of Health, as published by the National Cancer Institute, it only takes nicotine about 72 hours to leave your body, but it’s the withdrawal symptoms for the next 2 to 3 days afterwards that make it seemingly so difficult to stay quit. Mark Twain once said quitting smoking is easy, because he’s “done it a thousand times.”
Most smokers and vape advocates have had enough of the ammonia-laced nicotine ‘hangover’ that often features an intolerable headache, issues sleeping through the night, mood swings, and total lack of motivation. “Welcome to the club,” as they also say, but maybe these folks are ready to walk out of that lifestyle, and into one that promises longevity, enthusiasm, and reclamation of mood control.
Let’s figure out how much nicotine you are ‘consuming’ and that will make it much easier to address quitting. Here’s a quick comparison of several nicotine delivery devices, and their typical amount of nicotine delivered in milligrams.
Cigarettes: One cigarette can deliver up to 20 milligrams of nicotine, meaning a whole pack, usually 20 cancer sticks, deliver over 200 mg of the world’s third-most-addictive drug.
Vaping: Vaping isn’t much better, though most people think it is. Nearly all nic-juice or ‘e-juice’ jugs people buy for their vape gadgets have been treated with ammonia for potency. It’s called freebase nicotine and it is very health-damaging. One ‘session’ of vaping usually includes about 12 to 15 puffs, and since each inhale contains about 1 mg of nicotine, the dosage is nearly identical to that of a cigarette. Ask yourself, if you vape or use hookah pens, how many sessions per day do your engage, and how many puffs per session? Then do the math.
Hookahs: per puff, deliver about 1 mg.
Nicotine Patch: Comes in 3 main strengths of 7 mg, 14 mg, 21 mg.
Nicotine Gum: Comes in 2 main strengths of 2 mg and 4 mg.
Nicotine Lozenges: Come in 2 main strengths of 2 mg and 4 mg.
Cigars: (large) average about 13 to 16 mg.
Pipes: Tobacco pipes are loaded, and can easily deliver between 30 to 50 mg.
Chewing tobacco: 1 whole can contains nearly 150 mg.
Inhalers: Most inhalers deliver about 4 mg from a 10 mg cartridge (plug).
Easier said than done, they say, about quitting smoking, exercising, and eating clean, but “they” don’t know much about natural remedies and dopamine-boosting superfoods. It only takes 3 days to break the physical nicotine addiction, but it only takes ONE DAY to start cleaning up your daily consumption habits and choose some enjoyable exercise routines, so let’s address all of that now, in simplest fashion.
Eating clean means reading the ingredients label on everything you buy from now on. Eating clean rewards the consumer with vitality, energy, motivation, clear-thinking, and the ability to drop addictions to drugs, alcohol, and/or sweets. Most smokers (and even most vaping advocates) don’t bother even trying to eat clean because they know the pollution from the cigarettes is like a constant wrecking ball. Guess what? That’s why it makes it so hard for them to quit.
Eating clean and supplementing while quitting nicotine is key. Start by cutting out most gluten, processed oils, and anything with “added sugars.” Stop nuking (micro-waving) your food to death and avoid all artificial sweeteners (they make you hungrier for junk food). Shop around the outer perimeter at grocery stores and supermarkets. That’s where you find whole foods that should be your staple food for meals and snacks. Avoid or minimize alcohol consumption, especially while quitting nicotine, as it acts as a short term stimulant, but a long-term depressant, just like nicotine.
Many people quitting smoking or vaping just can’t seem to find the energy and enthusiasm to work out. They don’t want to join a gym because they’re just not “feeling it” and maybe don’t want to spend the money. The key to getting into an exercise routine is keeping it simple and fun. That’s what most people forget, and the reward is amazing.
Here’s a very popular home exercise teacher and her simple plan, with over 4 million views. It’s a basic routine of safe exercises, with up to 20 minutes of choices, that you can do in the comfort of your own home.
